For how to explain the fascination with peeling paint on ancient doors or the lean of ramshackle building or the light and shadows caught in a chunk of wood?

Jerry partially chopped away the trunk of a dead tree near our front deck yesterday, and when he stacked the wood in such a way that this morning clear honeyed light spread over it, the pieces sprang of beauty, and I was fascinated by their lines and light and texture.
